Virginia Creeper Sphinx (Darapsa myron) (Cramer, 1780)

 

Synonyms: Sphinx myron, Sphinx pampinatrix, Ampeloeca myron, hog sphinx

 

 

Darapsa myron occurs in eastern and central North America (from North Dakota and southern Ontario south to Florida and east Texas) and northeastern Mexico. It is found at deciduous forest edges and in woodlands. Wingspan 45-65 mm. The forewing is light brown to olive-gray with two dark bands; a dark dot in the median area. The hindwing is pale orange or brownish-orange. Adults take nectar; the larvae feed on the Vitaceae, including Virginia Creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia), grapes (Vitis spp.), and peppervine (Ampelopsis spp.). D. myron flies from March to September (all year in Florida); 1-3 generations per year.
